Remarkable story of one woman’s battle with cancer. Could not stop reading until finished. Brought back memories of 37 years ago when my daughter was so far away from home as a baby with a life threatening birth defect and the fears and trials of feeling alone. Can’t wait to read other books by this author.

I readily admit I am not a nonfiction reader. When I read for pleasure, I don’t enjoy reading material that reminds me of textbooks, and that includes most nonfiction. However, I do enjoy biographies and memoirs, and I attempt to read at least one a year. Surprisingly, the first book I will review this year falls into this category.
My Butterfly Cancer is a memoir by Marguerite “Markie” Madden. It chronicles her life prior to, during, and immediately following her battle with leukemia. What I enjoy most about this book is that it flows like a conversation. Mrs. Madden is a writer friend of mine with whom I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and conversing. As I read her book, I felt like she was talking to me.
Another thing I appreciate about Mrs. Madden’s book is the optimism. She describes her bout with a horrible, debilitating disease with a sanguine attitude. While informative, her story is encouraging and hopeful.
Not only does the story delve into Mrs. Madden’s battle with cancer, it also describes how the aftermath of the disease led her into a full-time career as a writer. The memoir concludes with useful information about the publishing process.
If you are looking for a book of encouragement and insightful advice, I urge you to pick up a copy of Markie Madden’s My Butterfly Cancer. You can find purchasing information here. Trust me, you will not be disappointed!

This book is a very good read. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. I went through the book feeling Ms. Madden’s emotions as if they were mine. She went through alot emotionally and physically and certainly came out a much stronger and wiser person. She bares her soul and does it so eloquently. She has definitely became an inspiration to me and I am sure to others as well. I highly recommend this book to everyone, but especially anyone that is dealing with a new diagnosis of a life changing Illness or Disease to read this. I am looking forward to reading more of her books.

This story is the heart-wrenching yet inspiring tale of one woman’s journey through hell and back again. In a clear, straightforward style, Ms. Madden describes her battle with and subsequent recovery from leukemia. Her brave tale is both inspirational and moving. It tells how her cancer transformed her, yet also inspired her to become a published writer. She made the best of a terrifying ordeal. She is a very brave woman.I recommend this book for anyone who has been diagnosed with or knows someone who has cancer.

Great book! I could feel her emotions as she tells of her day to day battle with cancer, physically and emotionally. She takes through everything as if you are there with her. I appreciate the honesty of her feelings. I recommend this book to everyone, it will truly make you take a step back and look at your life and relationships with a new appreciation of life. Can’t wait to read other books from Mrs. Madden!

The butterfly effect refers to the idea that something incredible small (ie, the simple flutter of a butterfly’s wings) can make an enormous change in how a situation is supposed to go. It is that imagery the author uses to share with readers how early unknown symptoms lead to a devastating cancer diagnosis and then to a new career.
Markie Madden is incredibly brave, sharing with us the details of her frightening journey and her determination not to let that journey be her defining moment. She shares her deepest emotions with us and then not only tells how how cancer lead to her becoming a writer, but gives the ins and outs of this process to help others find their way should they so choose.
What I especially liked about My Butterfly Cancer is that Ms. Madden is able to break down the complicated medical information in a way that the layman can understand. Cancer is a evil illness that has touched everyone in some way or another and having Ms Madden’s explanation’s of her treatment can help us to better understand the frightening treatment process. I thank Ms. Madden for sharing her story with us.

I was given this book free from Smashwords, and I loved it! An inspirational, heart-breaking, no holds barred story of one woman’s fight to live. Your heart pounds with Markie’s as she describes her and her family’s struggle with cancer and how the experience gave her a second chance to becoming a published author. For those looking for inspiration, for living past cancer or becoming an author, pick up this book.
